Setting Attempt Limits

You can limit the number of attempts users are allowed to make to complete a leaf item within a learning activity (or to complete an entire learning activity if it has a single leaf). Changes to attempt limits are taken into account only for users who have not started the activity: you can manually change the attempt limits for individual users who have already started the activity. You can also choose whether or not students see information about their attempt limits.

To set attempt limits for a single item:

  1. Choose the appropriate client or your own organization.

  2. Open the learning activity's details screen.

  3. Click the name of the folder in which the leaf item is stored, if necessary, then click the name of a leaf item.

  4. Click Edit (below the leaf item name).

  5. From the Edit menu, choose Attempts or Attempts and Scoring, whichever appears.
You see the Scoring or Attempts and Scoring screen.

  6. If necessary, click Yes, track status information.

  7. Note: If this option is disabled, the LMS still records that the item was launched, although the maximum attempt limit, if any, is not imposed.

  8. Select either Unlimited Attempts or specify the Maximum attempt limit.

  9. Choose what kinds of status-related information students should be able to see: check Show status information, then check the appropriate options. (Allow completed attempts to be reviewed allows students to open a previous attempt and gain access to the activity.)

  10. To address the issue where SCORM content may not reliably report that an item is suspended, click Compatibility Settings, then check Always resume last attempt unless completed. If this option is cleared, the SCO must explicitly report that an attempt was suspended in addition to not reporting it as complete.

  11. Click Save Changes.

Note: You can manually change the number of attempts for an individual user. Such limits will not be affected by changes made to the item/activity itself.

To set attempt limits for items in multiple learning activities:

  1. Choose the appropriate client or your own organization.

  2. Click Content (tab), then Activities (menu).

  3. Check each of the activities for which you want to set attempt limits or check the checkbox in the header to check all listed activities.

  4. From the Select Operation menu at the bottom of the screen, choose Attempts and Scoring and click Go.
You see the Attempts and Scoring screen.

  5. Choose the Type of item to which the attempts level should apply and specify the appropriate settings.

  6. Click Save Changes. The attempt limits are changed for all items of the selected type in all the selected activities.
